Daniel Castillo, M.D., is the director for simulation for the department of anesthesiology.  A board certified physician in anesthesiology and critical care medicine, Dr. Castillo became interested in medical simulation during his residency when he participated in several activities at the Center for Medical Simulation in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

After joining the University of Miami faculty in 2003, and with the creation of the UM/JMH Center for Patient Safety, his interest in this field intensified. He subsequently returned to Boston and became certified as a trainer and started implementing the learned skills in the UM-JMH CPS simulator.

At UM-JMH CPS, Dr. Castillo teaches students, residents, fellows, SRNAs, and nurses how to engage in the safest patient practices and to implement the “team work” concept in daily activities. He also developed a curriculum for anesthesia residents to teach management of stressful and complicated medical situations using available resources, interact efficiently and respectfully with all the healthcare providers, and to develop a critical thinking process to handle life-threatening situations in a high-fidelity simulation environment.
