Division of Informatics

The Division of Informatics is a multi-disciplinary division of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine, and Pain Management at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act revitalized our focus on optimizing the exchange of electronic health care information. Our mission is to improve the efficiency, safety, and quality of perioperative care through the meaningful use of Anesthesia Information Management Systems (AIMS). Using automated-alerts and clinical decision support, our goal is to improve patient outcomes and reduce the cost of perioperative care.

The Division consists of a diverse group of skilled professions, which includes anesthesiologists, computer programmers, biomedical engineers, anesthesia technicians, and business system analysts. Our primary responsibility is the training of all the clinical and non-clinical end-users and the design, implementation, and maintenance of the InnovianĀ® and PICISĀ® systems at the University of Miami Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospital, respectively. The Division seeks to use interfaces between each AIMS and the hospital’s electronic health record system (UChart, Meditech, Cerner) to improve the coordination and integration of patient care throughout the University of Miami Health System (UHealth).

undefinedKey functions of the Division include knowledge management and the application of business analytics to optimize perioperative care throughout UHealth and improve business processes. Through statistical analysis, forecasting, and predictive modeling, data warehouses are analyzed to gain insights and support decision-making. The Division uses reporting tools to facilitate management of daily operations and ensure compliance with national performance standards, such as the Surgical Care Improvement Program (SCIP). Through research on population health and operating room management, and a didactic resident-lecture series on clinical informatics and information system management, the Division demonstrates its commitment to developing new information and training anesthesiologists to leverage their knowledge of information systems to add value in their future practices.
