Anesthesiology Residency : Program Overview

Program Overview

Clinical Base Year

Applicants may select our 4-year program or choose to complete a qualified internship elsewhere. Our internship program blends medical, surgical, and elective experiences. We maximize critical care exposure during this year and interns can expect to be fully integrated into our anesthesia-managed ICUs. Interns will also participate in services like cardiology consults, ENT, pain management, and anesthesiology. You will receive at total of 5 weeks off during the year, plus scientific meeting days as needed.

CA-1

The first year begins with a month-long, controlled introduction to the operating room. New residents spend each morning working alongside senior residents in the OR, while afternoons are packed with essential lectures and high fidelity simulation activities. During this orientation month of duty residents do not take call. This provides substantial time for reading and academic preparation. The remainder of the year is spent strengthening these basic skills at various clinical sites including Ryder Trauma Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, labor & delivery, and anesthesiology-directed ICUs.

CA-2

Residents transition to a higher level of patient care and more challenging anesthetic plans. This year focuses on learning the subspecialty rotations including pediatric, cardiothoracic, and neuroanesthesia. Throughout the year, residents also gain exposure to acute and chronic pain medicine, preoperative evaluation, and post-operative care. Residents will also have additional rotations in obstetric and critical care medicine.

CA-3

Senior residents prepare for independent practice in both autonomous and supervisory capacities by serving as “team chiefs” during portions of their senior year. They are responsible for managing the operating room schedules, ensuring timely case starts and turnovers, as well as supervising junior residents. Senior residents also have the opportunity to enhance their skills within their preferred subspecialties. Electives in pediatric cardiac anesthesia, sleep medicine, and transplant anesthesia are available.

International Experience

We offer several venues to pursue international healthcare experiences. Select residents are able to practice pediatric anesthesiology for the underserved population in Haiti, hone their regional anesthesia skills in Jamaica, or train for one month in an exchange program with the Hunan Tumor Hospital in Changsha, China.

Extra Clinical Duties:

Many residents choose to participate in extra clinical duties for additional pay.

Educational Stipends:

Jackson Memorial Hospital provides each resident with $1250 per year for education and equipment purchases. The Department also provides generous financial support for any resident whose work is accepted for presentation at a scientific meeting.
