Clinical education is conducted in eight sites, all of which have rich and different characteristics.
Jackson Memorial Hospital
Jackson Memorial Hospital, the largest county hospital in America, is a non-profit tertiary care hospital and is the main teaching facility for the Miller / University of Miami School of Medicine. It has 1,567 licensed beds and is the only full service provider for the medically indigent of Miami-Dade County. In addition, it is a major referral center for all complicated patients in the Southern United States and the Carribean. Annually, approximately 25,000 surgeries of all types are performed.
Ryder Trauma Center
The Ryder Trauma Center a free-standing level 1 trauma center, is perhaps the most unique among civilian hospitals in the United States. It features 6 operating rooms, 6 resuscitation bays, 10 recovery room beds, 20 critical care beds and 110 inpatient care beds. This center offers the anesthesiology resident experience in resuscitation and perioperative management of patients with major injuries and their attendant effects upon bodily systems.
Miami Veterans Administration Medical Center
The 540-bed Miami VA Medical Center, immediately adjacent to the Jackson/UM campus, offers an excellent experience in those illnesses and problems characteristic of the veterans of our armed forces and their families. Eight OR’s, an ICU directed by our department, and a chronic pain clinic are located here.
Mount Sinai Medical Center
Mount Sinai Medical Center, located in Miami Beach, is the largest private non-profit teaching hospital in Florida, providing 1,109 beds. In conjunction with the Miami Heart Institute, residents will receive training in cardiac anesthesia as well as training in the Pain Management Clinic at Mt. Sinai Medical Center.
Miami Children’s Hospital
Miami Children’s Hospital boasts 268 pediatric and neonatal beds and treats more than 185,000 pediatric patients each year. MCH is the largest children’s hospital in Florida, one of the top 25 in the nation, and is home to the only free-standing pediatric trauma center. Residents will acquire vast knowledge in the treatment of pediatric patients.
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute
Owned by the University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is a 300-bed facility which houses the most outstanding Department of Ophthalmology in the country. A rotation through this facility gives the resident an opportunity to participate in anesthesia for all forms of common and specialized ophthalmic surgery. In addition, 5 OR’s in the 10 OR suite serve outpatient orthopedic and pediatric surgery patients.
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
One of the premier cancer treatment centers in the country, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is also owned by the University of Miami. It is the largest outpatient cancer treatment center in the southeastern United States. The 5 OR suite, with its large ENT surgery population, provides a rich source of difficult airway training. The Pain Management Clinic at Sylvester gives residents experience in treating chronic pain in cancer patients.
University of Miami Hospital
From emergency services and intensive care, to life-saving surgeries and minimally-invasive procedures, University of Miami Hospital advanced care by the region’s top physicians. With 560 private rooms, UMH provides patients with personalized treatment in a high-quality environment.
The Lennar Foundation Medical Center
The Lennar Foundation Medical Center is a 200,000-square-foot ambulatory center on the University’s Coral Gables campus that provides easy access to leading physicians for students, faculty, staff and surrounding communities.
The Lennar Foundation Medical Center delivers specialty care by the renowned Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (ranked the No. 1 eye hospital in the nation for 15 years), and the University of Miami Health System Sports Medicine Institute. It also includes specialized, individualized care for primary care, outpatient surgery, women’s and men’s centers, Comprehensive Diabetes Center, cardiology, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, physical therapy and human performance by EXOS, as well as the University of Miami Student Health Center.
